Where Is Walldorf? Country, State and Region Explained
Short answer: Walldorf is a town in Germany, in the state (Bundesland) of Baden-Württemberg in the south-west of the country. It lies in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis district, about 15 km south of Heidelberg and 30 km south-east of Mannheim, and is best known as the headquarters of SAP. Its official name is simply "Walldorf"; when it needs to be distinguished from other places it is written Walldorf (Baden).

Walldorf, Waldorf or Mörfelden-Walldorf? Don't mix them up
Several places share the name, and search engines often confuse them:
- Walldorf (Baden), Baden-Württemberg — this town: SAP headquarters, birthplace of John Jacob Astor, near Heidelberg. Postcode 69190.
- Walldorf in Hesse — part of the town of Mörfelden-Walldorf (Groß-Gerau district), next to Frankfurt Airport, about 80 km further north. If you are looking for "Walldorf near Frankfurt" or a Walldorf (Hessen) street address, this is the one; it has nothing to do with SAP.
- Walldorf in Thuringia — a village near Meiningen in central Germany; it has been one of Walldorf (Baden)'s partner towns since 2007.
- Waldorf, Maryland (USA) — a partner town since 2001; spelled with one "l".
- Waldorf-Astoria (New York hotel) and Waldorf salad — named, via the Astor family, after this Walldorf. Waldorf schools (Steiner education) take their name from the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in Stuttgart, whose owner founded the first school in 1919 — the factory itself was named after the New York hotel.
What is Walldorf known for?
- SAP — Europe's largest software company has had its headquarters here since 1977. See SAP in Walldorf.
- John Jacob Astor — born here in 1763; his bequest built the Astorhaus.
- Asparagus — white asparagus from the sandy fields around the town, celebrated at the June Spargelmarkt (events).
- History — first recorded in 770, a town since 1901 (history).
Is Walldorf a city?
Officially Walldorf is a Stadt (town) — it received town rights in 1901 — but with about 16,000 inhabitants it is a small town by any international standard. Because of SAP and its industrial area it has roughly as many jobs as inhabitants, so far more people work in Walldorf than its size suggests.
