From Weinheim to Walldorf
SAP began in 1972 as "Systemanalyse Programmentwicklung", a partnership founded in Weinheim by five former IBM employees. Its first office was in Mannheim, and in the early years the founders largely worked on their customers' own computers. In 1976 a company, SAP GmbH, was set up, and in 1977 SAP moved its seat to Walldorf. From 1980 it had its own building in Walldorf, including its own computer centre. The headquarters has stayed in Walldorf ever since, growing into a campus of office buildings — known internally by codes such as "WDF" — in the industrial area south of the town centre.
Why Walldorf?
SAP's own histories do not point to one dramatic reason. What is clear is that the young company needed its own premises and computer centre, and Walldorf's industrial area offered space right at the junction of the A5 and A6 motorways, close to the railway and within easy reach of Heidelberg, Mannheim and Karlsruhe — the region where the founders lived and where many of their early customers were. The move came at the start of SAP's rapid growth, and the company and the town have grown together since.
What SAP means for the town
SAP is Walldorf's largest employer. Together with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen and other companies in the industrial area, it gives the town of about 16,000 people roughly as many jobs as inhabitants, so most of the workforce commutes in from across the Rhine-Neckar region. Trade-tax income from the business sector has allowed the town to invest heavily in schools, sports and leisure facilities. Many SAP staff live not in Walldorf itself but in Heidelberg, Wiesloch, Mannheim and the surrounding villages. More on the local economy: Economy and Business in Walldorf.
Getting to SAP headquarters
- By train: the nearest station is Wiesloch-Walldorf, on the Heidelberg–Karlsruhe line, served by S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar lines S3 and S4 (roughly half-hourly towards Heidelberg/Mannheim and Bruchsal/Karlsruhe) and by some ICE trains. The station lies on the eastern edge of the Walldorf industrial area (technically just inside Wiesloch), about 1.5 km east of the main SAP buildings — roughly a 20-minute walk; local buses also run to the campus and the town centre. Check the VRN journey planner or DB Navigator for current connections.
- By car: A5 exit Walldorf/Wiesloch, or the A6 via the Walldorf interchange. Visitor parking arrangements are given by your SAP host.
- From Frankfurt Airport: about 80 km; by car around an hour, or by ICE/regional train via Mannheim or Heidelberg with a change to the S-Bahn.
